About Us

Shockingly, almost four decades have passed since a few film-buffs, mainly students, began organizing the first international film festival in Würzburg. Much has happened since that time, but one thing remains unchanged, the fact that our festival is solely organized by volunteers. In a world where marketing has taken over and making money is a motivating force, it is rare for a festival as old as ours to be fully powered by volunteers and still going strong. Every year, the directors, actors, and members of film crews that visit our festival make it shine; they feed our passion and strengthen our roots in a world where new festivals are sprouting up in new places every day, everywhere in the world.
Few of the people currently involved remember those early, formative years, but the Festival and Filminitiative e.V., the club that planted the first seeds, continue to prosper and grow together. Today, the Filmwochenende spans over a four-day period, screens more than 60 features, documentaries, and shorts, annually hosts around thirty guests, is powered by some 200 volunteers, sells roughly 14,000 tickets, and is supported by gracious sponsors and festivals guests who unfailingly stand by us year after year. Each of these components has made us what we are today –a small, but internationally-acclaimed film festival in a quaint university town in Bavaria.
If you are interested in supporting us in our endeavor, feel free to join one of our meetings to test the water, see how things work, and get a glimpse of what goes on once the lights go out and the guests go home. Though our office is only open from November thru early April, we check our emails daily.
